MWAKHAWA EARNS EIGHTH NBS GOLF TITLE

Malawi Law Society president John-Gift Mwakhwawa counted back Robert Coombes with a birdie on hole 5 at Country Club Limbe (CCL) on Saturday to effectively win his eighth NBS Bank Monthly Mug.

Mwakhwawa and Coombes tied on net 71 points to lie ahead of the 79-strong field, but Mwakhwawa had an upper hand of taking home the title when he hit a birdie on the odd hole.

After receiving his prize from the bank's marketing officer Lilian Kawaza, Mwakhwawa confessed that his hard-earned victory has banished demons that have been tampering with his swing in the stablefold formatted contest for the past year.

"This is my eighth NBS Bank Monthly Mug since I started playing in this event in 2008.I experienced a title drought in 2011, but it is quite relieving to win the competition's first mug this year and qualify for the 2012 Mug of Mugs Championship," the handicap-12 golfer said after adding the 17th golf title on his mantelpiece.

Mark Hanjahanja took position three with net 72 whereas Vaju Morzaria, Kingsley Mhango and Dingaan Chirwa were among the 10 two-club winners.

Apart from thanking the golfers for the excellent turn-out and encouraging them to continue doing business with NBS Bank, Kawaza also unveiled to the audience the bank's new marketing and public relations manager Timothy Ngwira.

"You are so special to us. You are always on our mind and you are never a loser with us. In a special way, let me also introduce to you our new marketing manager Mr. Ngwira," she told the golfers

The Blantyre Sports Club golfer said he expected to make the cut for the Winner of Winners tournament.

"I played one of the best golf having scored font nine and 40 back nine," Abbas said.

"I am excited because I have been trying to win this tournament."

CCL vice-captain David Phiri applauded NBS for the sponsorship.

"I would like to thank NBS Bank for the sponsorship because they have been with us for a number of years," Phiri said.

"I would like also to thank the golfers who turned out for the competition."

NBS marketing officer Lilian Kawaza said the bank was proud to be associated with the golfers, who are their customers and potential customers.
