Mzuzu farmer wins NBS Nissan Pickup - 03/11/2009

Mzuzu-based Vyson Mvuia became a proud owner of a brand new Nissan pick-up after emerging the overall winner in the Tobacco Farmers Fixed Deposit promotion organised by NBS Bank between March and October.

NBS head of retail banking Stanley Mkwamba said the promotion was organised to help farmers move from being borrowers to being self reliant by making savings for the next year's farming season. "After tobacco sales, farmers usually have excess cash. We wanted to encourage farmers to invest the excess money that they realise from the sales and get interest out of it so that the money can then be used for the next farming season, instead of them borrowing more to buy farm inputs and other necessities.

In the long run, we will be uplifting farmers in their farming activities," he said. NBS Bank has been running the Tpbacco Farmers Fixed Deposit promotion every year for the past 10 years. He said the bank's target was to get K 2million worth of savings from the promotion.

Other prizes given out in the promotion include bicycles, fertiliser and hampers of tobacco chemicals.
